Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning

A quick and easy alternative to the artificial ingredient filled seasoning packets, that's sure to ignite your tastebuds and take #TacoTuesday to a whole new level.

There’s no denying that #TacoTuesday has taken the world by storm and I’m 100% on board with it! If you know me, you know that my {all time favorite} cuisine is Mexican and this is no slight obsession, it’s a love that dates way back! Ever since I can remember, my family {aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins… everyone} would frequent many different Mexican restaurants throughout the area whenever there was a birthday, anniversary, or any other reason to celebrate and I quickly became hooked on chips, salsa, and virgin strawberry daiquiris {who wouldn’t}.  Fast-forward about 10 years to when I was in college and ironically, I began serving at one of my family’s favorite restaurants {+ that’s when the real obsession with Mexican kicked in}.

Although my coworkers and I complained endlessly about this job, having the ability to craft our own meals exactly how we wanted after a long weekend shift + kick back with a top shelf margarita {or fried ice cream} at the bar was something we all looked forward to! Plus, some of my very best friends + I met here while rolling burritos, dumping chips, and {owning the expo line} on Saturday nights and they are all just as obsessed as I am about Mexican. In fact, this cuisine has become tradition for our {Friendsgiving} dinner! So yes, we’re all obsessed.

Since switching my diet to {my version of} Paleo, I’ve become extremely particular about what foods I choose to put inside my body. This goes both for food at restaurants and food that is shared at gatherings of family and friends. I may catch a lot of heat for it {at times} but there are lots of good reasons behind my choices.

One being, people think that {Home Cooked Meals} are always the healthier option, and while for the most part, I agree whole-heartedly—there are some stipulations.

For instance, some people like to take {shortcuts} when cooking at home because of the crazy busy schedules we’re all facing in this day and age. But in reality, some of these shortcuts can seriously compromise the nutritional value of the food being prepared.

Let me explain what I’m talking about.  Tacos are awesome. Tacos are easy, quick, delicious + a great option for a real food, family friendly meal. But let me ask you something… what do you season your meat with? I’d be willing to put money on it that a large percentage of the population is cooking up their ground beef, tearing open a package of store bought taco seasoning and stirring it all together without even blinking an eye. And why would they? Taco seasoning seems harmless right? Wrong!

I’m a huge advocate for reading the label on every single item that goes into my grocery cart, and here is a prime example why. Next time you’re in a grocery store, turn over that packet of taco seasoning and you’re going to find: Yellow Corn Flour, Maltodextrin, Modified Corn Starch, Sugar, Carmel Coloring + more! This is all in addition to the spices and salt that you would expect to be in a taco seasoning—these added ingredients hold zero nutritional value and actually have a negative impact on our health, yet leave it to the food companies to hide as many artificial ingredients as possible in foods.

So, in hopes of saving at least one family from {enjoying} their next tacos filled with hidden fillers, I’m here to share my quickest, easiest recipe yet… Homemade Taco Seasoning! It like to whip up a double batch and store it for weeks, as it’s just as convenient as the store bought packages, without the added {junk}.
