"Pure Barre is the fastest, most effective, yet safest way to change your body"
The Twin Cities Fitness Guide {TCFG} is a collaborative effort by health and fitness bloggers Define Fettle & RunEatSnap. This guide offers reviews on the many emerging fitness studios & gyms throughout the Twin Cities area. We created this guide as a resource for you to turn to when looking for a studio that fits your goals, lifestyle, and needs, or maybe you’re just looking for a new class to try out. Plus, fitness is our JAM and after finding all of these awesome places, we couldn’t help but share them with you! We have participated in classes at each & every studio reviewed in order to give you first hand advice on what to expect when attending classes yourself.
Studio: Pure Barre-Edina
Location: 7101 France Ave S. Edina, MN 55435 {Hint: it's on the 2nd level}
What is Pure Barre? “Utilizing the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements set to fantastic music, Pure Barre is a total body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs, abs, + arms, + burns fat in record-breaking time.”
“The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength sections is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles, without the bulk. The technique works to defy gravity by tapering everything in + lifting it up.”
What to expect: This is a 1-hr class, that is low-impact, however that doesn’t mean that you’re not going to work hard, so be sure to bring a water bottle! Most {barre babes} wear full length leggings, a fitted tank top, + sticky socks. The sticky socks {available for purchase at the studio} are not required, however you must wear some type of sock at all times while in the studio + class.
My take on Pure Barre: This wasn’t my 1st barre workout, I had actually been introduced about a year ago at the grand opening of Pure Barre Edina, but it had been a few months since I had been to a class. The warm + inviting atmosphere when walking into the studio was wonderful. I loved that the instructors greet everyone by name with smiles spread across their faces. Everyone grabs a spot on the floor, does a bit of stretching, + interacts with other class members until it’s go time! {If you are new to the studio, don't be intimidated as the instructors take time to discuss with you some of the common movements + verbiage used in the class such as: 'tuck, hold, + freeze'}. The beginning of class is a series of exercises designed to raise your heart rate, increase blood flow to your muscles + get your body ready to work.
The class is then split into 5-6 different sections that specifically focus on areas of the body such as: glutes, arms, abs + thighs. Throughout these sections your muscles frequently reach fatigue + you start to shake uncontrollably {that’s where the infamous barre ‘shake’ comes in}. The absolute toughest area of work for me is thighs, as this requires a ton of time on your tip toes + I’ve been known to shake so uncontrollably in some of these positions that my heels can’t even stay off of the ground {SUPER embarrassing}. No matter how many classes I attend, at some point in the class I’m always secretly asking the instructor to ‘count faster’.
This workout definitely pushes me outside of my usual comfort zone + has taught me a whole new way to exercise. The focus on increasing muscle tone + flexibility really draws me to the class as these are main areas of focus for many women including myself.
I would highly recommend this class + studio to anyone, but feel that it would be extremely beneficial for those who are unable to participate in high-impact exercises, previous dancers or gymnasts + everyone looking to Tone It Up!
