I have a confession, ok 2 confessions. First, I’ve had this {Gluten Free Monster Cookie} recipe in the Define Fettle recipe vault for exactly 1 year now because I meant to share it last year, but it ended up taking 8 trials before I got the recipe right and by that point it was damn near Valentine’s Day. Second, Christmas cookies are my weakness.

I’ve gotten significantly better over the years {and honestly rarely touch cookies that I haven’t made myself}, but before I started this real food lifestyle I would eat Christmas cookies until I felt sick… day after day after day, until they were gone. Then I’d look in the mirror, feel ashamed of the excessive bloating, feel sick to my stomach and go workout for multiple hours a day and clean up my diet until I was back to my {normal}.

Binging is not the answer to a healthy lifestyle, it’s not healthy physically or mentally, but for some people restriction isn’t the answer to a healthy lifestyle either. Every person is different, with different personalities, and around the holidays it’s especially important to recognize which one you are so that you can set yourself up for as much success as possible.

Some people are moderators and some are abstainers, read more about the difference here. The example that I like to use is the bag of M&M’s. Are you able to open the bag and have just 5? Or are you the type of person who opens the bag and grabs 5, then you come back for 5 more, and then 10 more, and then 15 more, until the entire bag is emptied.

If you relate to the first scenario more, it’s safe to say that you are a moderator and you are able to satisfy a craving with a small portion of that item.  However, if someone tells you that you can’t have chocolate for a week, all you want is the chocolate and it won’t leave your mind until you’ve had some.  On the flip side, if you resonate more with the second scenario where you literally can’t stop eating the food until it’s gone, you might be an abstainer. An abstainer is someone who has trouble stopping once they’ve started but have no problem staying away from items that they’ve decided are {off limits}.

There is no right or wrong side here, it’s either what you are or what you aren’t. The important thing is to recognize your tendencies so that you can decide how to most successfully attack the holiday parties {and cookie platters} that are sure to come within the next 10 days.

And now for the good stuff… these cookies are gluten free and much lower in processed sugar than any standard recipe I’ve found, so you can feel good about indulging in one of these or sharing them with your family over the holidays or any time of year really.
